Our history

Swedbank has been operating in Lithuania since 2005, when it acquired Hansapank, operating in three Baltic countries. By expanding to Lithuanian market, Swedbank has considerably consolidated local financial systems and brought long going banking traditions to the country.

  • The roots of Swedbank can be traced back to the Swedish savings bank movement, which started about 200 years ago. Since then, the bank has undergone several stages of growth and acquisitions, taking its current name Swedbank in 1997.
  • Hansapank entered Lithuanian market in 1996 acquiring a major local bank.
  • Upon acquiring Hansapank, Swedbank simultaneously entered all three Baltic countries and established Swedbank Group, which now operates in four home markets – Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
  • Swedbank operates in Lithuania under the current brand since 2008.

Financial Health

Aiming to contribute to a long-term positive change in society, we engage in a wide range of educational initiatives. At their forefront is the Institute of Finances, which focuses on financial health by promoting financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills in the society. Dedicated team of financial experts engages in wide range of financial topics and activities, including:

  • The Finance Lab, a unique educational space offering interactive ways for schoolchildren to be introduced to various financial topics.
  • The Swedbank blog, an online information platform covering topics on personal and business finances, saving, investment, pensions and other.
  • Mokonomika, the largest online lesson in Lithuania for schoolchildren on sustainability, finance management, innovation, and other topics.
  • Publishing books and workbooks focused on children’s financial education, initiating public surveys on various financial topics, organizing conferences and other events for schoolchildren, teachers and other target audiences.
